Connecting Your Fitness Tracker

How to connect your wearable device to MoveTogether, what data syncs, and how to switch trackers.

Updated over 2 months ago

Supported Devices

MoveTogether currently works with the following fitness trackers:

  • Apple Watch (all models)

  • Fitbit (all models)

  • Garmin (all models)

  • WHOOP (all models)

  • Oura Ring (all generations)

How Connections Work

The way your tracker connects depends on which device you use:

Apple Watch connects through Apple Health. MoveTogether reads your fitness data directly from the Health app on your iPhone. Your Apple Watch automatically syncs its data to Apple Health, and MoveTogether reads it from there.

Fitbit, Samsung, WHOOP, and Oura connect through OAuth sign-in. You'll sign in to your tracker's account directly within MoveTogether, which authorizes the app to securely access your fitness data from that provider's servers.

Connecting Your Apple Watch

  1. Open MoveTogether and go to Settings → Connected Devices.

  2. Tap Apple Watch.

  3. A prompt will appear asking you to grant MoveTogether permission to read your Apple Health data. Tap Allow All (or select the specific categories you want to share).

  4. Your activity will begin syncing automatically.

Important: MoveTogether needs read access to Apple Health categories, including Steps, Active Energy (Calories), Exercise Minutes, and Workouts. If you deny these permissions, your activity won't appear in competitions.

If you don't see the permissions prompt:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone (not MoveTogether).

  2. Scroll down and tap Health.

  3. Tap Data Access & Devices.

  4. Find MoveTogether in the list and tap it.

  5. Enable the data categories you want to share.

Connecting Fitbit

  1. Open MoveTogether and go to Settings → Connected Devices.

  2. Tap Fitbit.

  3. You'll be redirected to the Fitbit login page. Sign in with your Fitbit account credentials.

  4. Review the permissions and tap Allow to authorize MoveTogether.

  5. Your data will begin syncing. Initial sync may take a few minutes.

Tip: Make sure the Fitbit app on your phone has recently synced with your Fitbit device before connecting to MoveTogether. This ensures your latest data is available.

Connecting Garmin

  1. Open MoveTogether and go to Settings → Connected Devices.

  2. Tap Garmin.

  3. You'll be redirected to the Garmin Connect login page. Sign in with your Garmin account credentials.

  4. Review the permissions and tap Allow to authorize MoveTogether.

  5. Your data will begin syncing. Initial sync may take a few minutes.

Tip: Make sure the Garmin Connect app on your phone has recently synced with your Garmin device before connecting to MoveTogether. This ensures your latest data is available.

Connecting WHOOP

  1. Open MoveTogether and go to Settings → Connected Devices.

  2. Tap WHOOP.

  3. Sign in with your WHOOP account credentials.

  4. Authorize MoveTogether to read your activity data.

  5. Your data will begin syncing.

Connecting Oura Ring

  1. Open MoveTogether and go to Settings → Connected Devices.

  2. Tap Oura.

  3. Sign in with your Oura account.

  4. Authorize MoveTogether to access your fitness data.

  5. Your activity will begin syncing.

What Data Syncs?

Depending on your tracker, MoveTogether pulls the following data for competitions:

Data Type

Apple Watch

Fitbit

Garmin

WHOOP

Oura

Steps

Active Calories

Exercise Minutes

Workouts

How Often Does Data Sync?

  • Apple Watch: Data syncs within minutes, since it's read directly from Apple Health on your device.

  • Fitbit, Garmin, WHOOP, Oura: Data typically syncs every 15–30 minutes. The exact frequency depends on how often your tracker's companion app syncs with its servers.

You can pull down on the leaderboard screens to refresh and request the latest data.

Switching Trackers

If you get a new wearable or want to switch to a different tracker:

  1. Go to Settings → Connected Devices.

  2. Tap your currently connected tracker and select Disconnect.

  3. Connect your new device following the instructions above.

Your competition history, achievements, and friends list stay intact. Only future activity will come from the new tracker.

Can I Connect Multiple Trackers?

You can only have one active tracker at a time to prevent duplicate data. If you switch devices mid-competition, your score will reflect the combined activity from both trackers (the data already recorded from your old tracker, plus new data from your new tracker going forward).
